Michael
Harwell is a self taught artist. Michael’s unique
style is both charming and playful. He achieves his finished work
by shaping a block of bass wood with a draw knife, without the use
of a pattern or cutout. The shapes are then carved and detailed
with chisels and knives. Once the carving is done it is sanded and
painted with great detail and care. The scenes on many of his Santas
are rendered using a combination of carving and burning. Michael’s
skill as a carver, attention to detail, imaginative scenery, and
distinctive use of color makes each work unique.
His highly sought after work has been sold in galleries
from Chicago to Atlanta. In December, 2007, Michael’s work
was featured on NBC’s Atlanta affiliate, 11Alive News. The
story was picked up by CNN, bringing national attention to his imaginative
works.
